Spiritual Wisdom inspired by Elizabeth
Gilbert’s “Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy,
India and Indonesia”
“The vows that we take on our wedding day are a
serious effort to undergird this fragile institution, to convince somebody—anybody—that
God Almighty has brought together these two people for some unimaginable reason
that none of the guests could ever understand, much less condone. We hope that
‘No man can tear asunder’ these two. Unfortunately God Almighty is not the one
who swears these wedding vows; man does.
“And so the whole pile of yarn starts to unravel
from Day One. This is why I think we should swear our vows to Magneto, or The
Blob, or Mr. SuperGlu. Or maybe the vows should be addressed to Spider Man,
since he might have better luck with keeping these two together. A bit of
Spider webbing might just do the trick.”
