Advice in the manner of Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Eat, Pray, Love”
“I can't listen to
anything when I'm writing — not the radio, not music. It tends to interfere
with the voices in my head. I envy my friends who are painters because they can
listen and work at the same time. I need the stillness and quiet, largely
because I tend to read aloud to myself as I'm working (at least this is what I
tell anybody in the same room with me). But I've gotten out of the habit of
listening to music at all lately — maybe because I'm talking too much?”
