“My feeling about literature is the same as my feeling about dogs – they are meant to be used. There's no reason to keep a dog in your house that is so soft and rare that you can't put your feet up on it. Likewise, a book that sits on a shelf—never to be read again—is like a dead book. Which is why I take books from the Public Library. And returning a book to the library is just like murdering it. So why take on all that bad karma? Just keep the book. They have plenty of others.

“Most of the time, I'm constantly giving my own books away to my friends. I enjoy giving copies of the books I wrote to my close friends. Of course, if they want them signed—well, then I have to charge full retail. That’s the law.”
